For Better Photography: Master photographer John Strazza teaches you to Take Control of your Camera and Exposures. This easy to read book is The Definitive Guide to Your Camera’s Light Meter & Histogram. This is very useful for both Black & White and Color photography. Digital and film.
Have you ever asked one of the following questions?
• How can I get better looking photographs?
• How can I learn to understand my camera’s meter?
• How do I trust my camera meter for better exposures?
• What is a Histogram and how do I use it?
• Why are my photographs often too dark or too light?
• I have a new camera but my photos have not improved, what’s wrong?
• How come my highlights are pure white with no detail?
• Why are my shadows are too dark with no detail?
• Why is Middle Gray and/or Histograms so important for good exposures?
Do any of these questions sound like something you have asked yourself?
If so, you are in the right place and it may surprise you as to how simple and easy the answer to all of them really is. I hear questions like these every day as I meet people in our photography gallery and they all have somethings in common; understanding your light meter or histograms or both. And, Middle Gray is THE centerpiece of these two things, or anything that has to do with metering light. All camera light meters look for middle gray and that’s where this whole story begins.
Here’s what other readers are saying
“John, Just finished reading this from beginning to end, and I wish I had it when I started! Well-written, thought out, and easy to understand. When i have a question, it is answered in the next paragraph. Great! ” Brian Ach. Photographer with Getty and Wired.
“Hi John,
Your book is a little gem! Congrats.
Proper exposure has always been the technical hinge pin of photography and you have done an excellent job of explaining what the camera records …” Nick Zungoli. Premier landscape photographer in NY’s Hudson Valley.
Why Listen to me?
Good question, which I’ll answer with few words and more examples. Go to my website and look at My Photographs. If after looking at them you feel that I know what I’m doing, then by all means listen to me. If not, then that’s ok. I used the simple techniques I show in this book for a majority of the photographs you will see on my site. I’ve been doing this for over 40 years.
This eBook, Finding Middle Gray (and then some) will explain in easy non-tech language what middle gray is and how to use it when taking photographs. You’ll be talking great exposed photographs in no time.
This eBook also explains the histogram on your digital camera and how it works together with middle gray. These two things, Middle Gray and the Histogram, are the most important lessons you can learn if you want to grow out of Auto Exposure only photography.
Reading this 60 page book will reward you with better quality exposures and photographs. You will be able to generate better quality out of your new (or old) camera and discover what it can really do. You will be amazed at the results you will get right away.
This little book is very empowering to photographers who apply these easy and simple lessons. You will be able to use your camera in other modes besides full Auto only. Manual and semi manual modes will no longer intimidate you because you will understand what your camera meter is looking for.

It’s always fun when a “student” of photography comes in to our gallery and looks around. Inevitably they are carrying a pretty nice camera and want to show it to me or a new lens they have. Then the conversation starts about how I get the quality I get in my photographs and or prints.
It’s a great question, because there is a method to my madness and most people can achieve good quality with some learning, understanding and practice. Middle gray is certainly part of my work flow as well so is the histogram. Both are valuable to me.
I wouldn’t fully understand my histogram though if middle gray was not part of my foundation of learning. Without middle gray a huge piece of the puzzle is missing.
So yes, you have to learn how to use the histogram, which is why I have a big section about it in this book. But, get a good understanding of middle gray as well, because these two so often work hand in hand. One helps you understand the other.
If you are a student, literally or figuratively, Finding Middle Gray is a great start to excellent exposures and fine photographs.
