And Then Some

Some wonder what I mean when I say “and then some” in the title of this website. The short explanation is that digital cameras have new technologies that help the metering process and in some ways bypass the middle gray metering techniques. The concept of middle gray is not abandoned though, far from it. But, Live View with Histograms, for instance, give the photographer a valuable tool that leans on different concepts of exposure. Exposing “to the right” of the histogram for instance helps create a “healthy file” with good bit rate information, but may actually be a very different exposure reading than an incident light meter reading for middle gray might have given. If this does not sound clear for now, please don’t worry, the explanation is actually quite simple and I explain it fully in words and pictures in my new book titled “Finding Middle Gray (and then some)“.

Anyway, to answer the question about what I mean when I say “and then some” .. it refers to the newer digital tools that we can now use to get great exposures for excellent results along with our understanding of how to find Middle Gray! Together they make a powerful toolkit for working with light and exposure.
This image below was taken with a new Olympus EP-1 and a 17mm lens using some newer techniques including Live View and live histograms. The image was converted to black and white and processed for this particular portfolio and vignetted for a more dramatic result.
